Imphal: The Imphal West district administration has urged people living near the river to remain alert against the possibility of embankment breach as the water level is rising due to heavy rains, an official said on Tuesday.

“Major rivers in the district have reached the danger level in Imphal area…,” said a notification issued by the Imphal West District Magistrate’s office on Monday night.

“Continuous rainfall has been reported in Imphal and Nambul river catchment areas,” it said. It said the India Meteorological Department has warned of “heavy to very heavy rainfall in Manipur for the next five days”.

“People living on the river banks or near the river route are requested to remain alert against any possibility of embankment breach,” the notification said. The Imphal river is the largest river in the Manipur valley.
