World Hypertension Day 2024: The problem of high blood pressure is emerging as a common problem among people nowadays. In medical language, this problem is known as hypertension. According to the National Family Health Survey in 2017, one out of every 8 Indians is suffering from hypertension. It is a matter of concern that the problem of hypertension can also pose a risk to a person’s life by creating the risk of heart attack and stroke. According to statistics, 7.5 million people die every year worldwide due to high blood pressure. This is the reason why it is also known as silent killer. World Hypertension Day is celebrated every year on 17 May with the aim of spreading awareness among people about hypertension.

History of World Hypertension Day-

The celebration of World Hypertension Day was started by the World Hypertension League (WHL) on 14 May 2005. However, in view of the increasing cases of hypertension, later this special day started being celebrated on 17th May. The objective behind doing this was to prevent high blood pressure in people and also to prevent it from increasing.

Purpose of celebrating World Hypertension Day-

World Hypertension Day is celebrated to deal with this problem arising due to poor lifestyle and uncontrolled lifestyle. The purpose behind celebrating this day is to free people from the problem of hypertension. On this day people are made aware about the causes, symptoms and ways to avoid hypertension.

Theme of World Hypertension Day-

Every year a special theme is kept to celebrate World Hypertension Day. This year’s theme is ‘Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, and Live Longer’.
