Big action on unwanted calls, 2.75 lakh telephone numbers disconnected, services of 50 firms stopped

The Uncut

New Delhi. In a massive crackdown on unsolicited calls and unregistered tele-marketing companies, 2.75 lakh telephone numbers have been disconnected and services of 50 firms have been suspended. This action has been taken under the recent tough stance adopted by the telecom regulator TRAI. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) had asked telecom companies to blacklist unregistered tele-marketing firms and shut down the numbers associated with them.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, TRAI said that it has seen a significant increase in fake calls. More than 7.9 lakh complaints have been filed against unregistered tele marketing firms in the first half of the year 2024. TRAI said that to curb this, strict instructions were issued to all access providers on August 13, 2024 and asked to immediately rein in unregistered tele marketing firms.

TRAI said, “Keeping in mind these instructions, telecom companies have taken strict measures against misuse of telecom resources for fraudulent calls. They have blacklisted more than 50 firms and shut down more than 2.75 lakh SIP DIDs/mobile numbers/telecom resources. These steps are expected to reduce fraudulent calls and provide relief to consumers.” TRAI has urged all stakeholders to contribute to a cleaner and more efficient telecom ecosystem.
