Karunakaran and Subramaniam in the quarterfinals of Taipei Open

Taipei: India’s Satish Kumar Karunakaran and Shankar Subramaniam entered the men’s singles quarterfinals of the Taipei Open badminton tournament after winning hard-fought matches here on Wednesday but the women’s singles players put up a disappointing performance.

Karunakaran defeated Kantaphon Wangcharoen of Thailand 24-22, 23-21 while Subramaniam defeated Joakim Oldorf of Finland 21-12, 19-21, 21-11. In men’s singles, Kiran George lost to Indonesia’s Yohanes Sot Marcelino 15-21, 21-8, 21-16 despite winning the first game.

In the women’s category, Pornpicha Choikwong of Thailand defeated Aakarshi Kashyap in straight games 19-21, 18-21, while world number three Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei defeated Tanya Hemanth 21-11, 21-10 in just 27 minutes.

Anupama Upadhyay made a good start by winning the first game against Lauren Lam but the American player made a brilliant comeback to win the match 17-21, 21-19, 21-11.
